I have a strong childhood association with Turtles chocolates. Back then, having a box of Turtles around was a BIG deal; it signified a special occasion. After all, that little cartoon turtle wasn’t dressed up in a top hat and tails for nothing, right? Having a Turtle was as rare as attending a black-tie event. I remember Turtles being around at Christmas time as a very indulgent treat.
These days, I recognize that Turtles are not the epitome of fine chocolates that I once upheld them to be. Still, they have a special place in my heart; which is why I was pretty pumped when my husband came home with Turtles ice cream. Yeah, that’s right…Turtles ICE CREAM. I didn’t even know this stuff existed…but let me tell you, it’s freaking yummy! But wait…it gets better.
For a post-supper treat that evening, we offered the ice cream to our girls. Elissa – the purist – wanted a bowl of ice cream, but her little sister, Lily, requested a milkshake. As I used our Magic Bullet to whip up her milkshake, I had a brilliant thought: This would be even better with alcohol (for the adults, that is!).
Fast-forward to later that night – when the kids were snug in their beds – and the time was finally right to test my theory. In a sweet twist of serendipity, Ian and I had just been to the LCBO where we had made an unusual purchase (unusual for us, anyway): Baileys with a hint of Caramel. I think you can probably guess where I’m going with this, so I’ll fast-forward to the recipe:
- 3 very generous ice-cream scoops of Turtles ice cream
- 2 oz. Baileys Irish Cream with a hint of caramel
- 1/2 c. milk
Considering the ingredients, I’m sure this drink has about a million calories; I’m scared to check. But let me tell you – it is so worth it. Ian and I were thinking it would even make a nice substitute for dessert when hosting friends for dinner. You could dress it up by adding some shaved chocolate curls on top.
What is your fave holiday drink? I’d love to test-drive your recipes!
