The Mother of Adventure

Birthday buddies

on November 9, 2013

Cath and Son September 2010On August 19, 1975, two baby girls were born.

They aren’t sisters, although 38 years later they are still mistaken as such by strangers who see them together.

Catherine Anne Beddall was born and raised in Ottawa, Ontario, while Sonia Ruth Toews was born in Dauphin, Manitoba. Less than two years later, she would move farther from her birthday buddy – westward to St. Albert, Alberta, where she grew up.

Though they briefly crossed paths as teenagers, it would be 28 long years before Cathy and I would connect – finally reunited through a common workplace – and a very special friendship quickly took root.

It’s very strange to meet someone that was born on the same day – of the same year – as you. It’s stranger – and even more special – when that person seems to literally share a brain with you. It’s a thrill to connect with a new friend so easily that you feel comfortable sharing everything with them – the good, the bad and the ugly.

Cath and SonYesterday, Cathy gave me an amazing surprise; she sent me a text saying she was whisking me away on an overnight getaway, just the two of us. She wrote, ‘Happy Birthday!!!’ making reference to a belated birthday gift she’s been plotting (along with my husband) since last August.

I’m so excited to be unexpectedly spending the weekend with my birthday buddy. And now it’s time to pack my bags for our next shared adventure…can’t wait.
